Is environment a good excuse for me not being able to do my best?

Studious_Ambition_ asked:

Unfortunately my family had limited options when we came to the US. As a result, for my high school years we had to settle in the deep south which in my opinion is probably the worst place to live in the US.

Due to the economy and out of state tuition costs rising, I am a high school senior who will be forced to go college in state. Here is how my environment stopped me from being the best I could have been:

1. Most schools are either full of rednecks/hillbillies who hate minorities (especially Asians such as myself) or ghetto kids who basically start fights for no reason. Private schools are expensive and parents would not send me there.
2. I had the opportunity to go to a selective high school and I did but the school I went to was only known for sending kids to regular colleges and not Ivies. The school was not as bad as the other schools but still the opportunities were limited, it did not have a football program or anything and no debate team.
3. The county I live in is poor, the average income is 15k.
4. I had run into a lot of bad influence and a lot of bad people, some who are in jail right now because I had no other choice. Having stubborn Asian parents doesn’t help the cause either.

My dream was to go to Harvard but I didn’t even bother to apply because I was told I wouldn’t make it in. I will be going to college and I don’t even know where to turn to for help, I want to go to Harvard and Yale still but the opportunity just isn’t there for me.

I learned the hard way that environment can be the limiting factor for a person but is it a good excuse for me not being able to go to my favorite college?

I am currently a high school senior going on to college. I have been bullied in the past because of my race and it is my dream to go to Harvard but I don’t know how it can happen now.

How do I force myself to stick to a food budget?

Shinchon asked:

I’m basically unemployed (employed on paper, but basically zero hours), and I have had nine job interviews, and so far no luck.

My rent is very, very low (about $150 a month when utilities are factored in). Food is costing me a lot of money, though — probably $200 a month.

I have calculated that if I went on a very strict regimen of grocery store discount food and water (no soda), I could make in on $100 a month for food.

Trouble is, there’s always this temptation to eat a McDonald’s cheeseburger or buy a Coke “just this once.”

How do I force myself to stick to a strict food budget?

Is probability a waste of time when physics is involved?

Tryandstopme asked:

Like the spinning of a arrow on a circle. and see which color it lands on.

Is it really probablity when you take into account of all the factors such as force applied to spinner, is spinner on flat surface, how evenly divided is the spinner..

If you can take all this into account, cant you figure where its going to land without guessing.
To me it seems pointless to teach kids this…..why do we do it…….for entertainment?

Help, Operations Management challenge question?

Matty asked:

I have tried so much trying to solve this question, but obviously I gave up and need some help.

“BeGood corporation designs and manufactures products that make the world a better place. They recently designed a new product and are making process choices for its manufacture. Choice A involves utilizing their current work force with a minor investment in equipment. This investment would be $50,000 and would require another $85 in labor per unit. Choice B involves an investment of $950,000 in new equipment, and would require another $25 in labor per unit.

required:
(a)- which choice would be most appropriate if BeGood sells 2500 units? Why?
(b)- which choice would be most appropriate if BeGood sells 1000 units? Why?
(c)- at what volume would BeGood be indefferent to the process choice?
(d)- in the context of your answer to part (c), what other factors that BeGood should be considering?”

I need to quit this multicultural sorority; is it possible to be a part of an NPHC sorority after the fact?

Gigi asked:

The sorority I joined was not what I thought it would be. The foundations it boasted are fragmented and forgotten; the change–the service–it promised the community is left broken; the sisterhood is fake and divided. I feel like it hides behind a facade that no one can see…except me. They are member-hungry and losing the focus the founders worked hard to establish. I can’t see any stability in this, and I recognize my membership as a mistake.

But what are my reasons to join another sorority? Well, I don’t see myself as just “joining another sorority.” I see myself becoming an addition to a powerful organization. Understand that I am a driving force alone, but if I were to stand with strong women that I can call my sisters, I think I would be all the better. When I say “I” here, I mean that I will be able to help in the important work of the recognized organization. Additionally, I am in love with Jesus, my Lord and Savior. I can’t believe I didn’t factor Him into my decision when I pledged that other sorority. I would want this organization to be a part of my life where when I give, I give on one accord, and when I receive, the seed planted in me will reap with benefits according to God’s will.

My reasons are many, but my time is spent. I would think most answers from non-NPC or non-IFC Greek members would yield a response that demonstrates comprehension to my question because I know that, historically, most of these GLOs have similar values to NPHC. Although, if you are NPC or IFC and you understand, do answer.

Thank you,
Gigi
